Breast Reduction and Lift

While a breast reduction can help alleviate the back, neck and shoulder pain associated with overly large breasts, reshaping the remaining breast tissue is a must for seeing the best possible results. Combining a breast lift as part of breast reduction ensures that your final contours will be just as shapely, yet more proportionate to the rest of your frame.

About Combining Procedures

Breast reduction can be an important step in improving overall quality of life for women with overly large breasts, who often experience significant physical discomfort as the result of supporting so much excess weight. Yet, breast reduction surgery itself is about more than simply going smaller. The final results of breast reduction surgery should look full and flattering with smooth, natural-looking contours. Including some aspects of a breast lift at the same time helps accomplish these goals.

During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Halls removes fat and glandular tissue from the breasts, bringing them down to a smaller, more proportionate and comfortable size. At the same time, Dr. Halls gives the breasts a rounder shape, lifts them higher on the torso and removes any excess skin using the same surgical techniques that are exercised during a breast lift. The nipple and areola can also be repositioned and resized to better match the smaller breast.

Breast reduction surgery is often performed with elements of a breast lift because the procedures resolve complementary issues. For instance, women with relatively large breasts often experience varying degrees of ptosis, or sagging. While a breast reduction will make the breasts smaller, a lift will bring them higher for a more uplifted profile.

When performed on its own, a breast lift won’t significantly reduce breast size unless a breast reduction is included as well. Some women with sagging or droopy breasts choose to undergo a breast lift without any additional surgeries. However, Dr. Halls may recommend a reduction instead for those women who want smaller breasts in addition to a change in shape, placement and profile.

The cost of breast reduction compared to a breast lift will vary depending on the approach Dr. Halls takes during surgery. Additionally, breast reduction may be covered by your health insurance provider if deemed medically necessary, while a breast lift is considered cosmetic. After your consultation Dr. Halls’ staff will discuss surgical costs with you, including information about procedures that may be allowed by your insurance plan or are self-pay, so you can make an informed decision before moving forward.

Recovery & Results

You should notice an immediate difference in the way your breasts look following your surgery, but the full results will initially be obscured by swelling. It’s normal to experience pain for the first couple of days, but wearing a special surgical bra 24 hours a day can help reduce discomfort. Patients tend to experience milder degrees of pain for a week or two after their surgery, and any swelling will continue to subside over the next several weeks. Dr. Halls will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions and schedule your first follow-up appointment.

Following your breast reduction and lift, your breasts should look smaller, more proportionate and have a higher placement along with a significantly lighter weight, giving you more comfort in your day-to-day life, along with a more attractive, enhanced profile that better suits your body.
